History of First Pres
First Presbyterian Church of Crossville began with a meeting of interested people on March 28, 1988. Dr. Henry Schum, Development Coordinator for the Tennessee Valley Presbytery (PCA) served as part-time pastor and advisor until July 1989. At that time, Rev. Sanders Campbell served as interim pastor through June 1990.
On August 19, 1990 Rev. Steven Simmons was installed as the first pastor. He served until February 1999. Rev. Glenn Jakes was called as our second pastor. He served from July 2000 to September 2004. In early 2005, Rev. Richard ‘Dick’ Gillen accepted the call to un-retire and serve as interim pastor of First Pres. He was used by God to shepherd the church through a time of transition. Our current pastor is Rev. Michael Quillen, Sr. He was ordained and installed July 30, 2006.
When it began, the church met in various locations until the current 4-acre property was purchased. An existing house on the property was remodeled to serve as a place of worship. The first service in the renovated building was March 26, 1989.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the current church building was held in January 1991. The building was dedicated to the service of the Lord on April 28, 1991. In 1999, an addition was completed which enlarged the fellowship hall and added more classrooms, a library, and office space. A gazebo was built on the old barn foundation behind the church. It is used for outdoor activities.
First Presbyterian Church supports missionaries and ministries which reach out with the truth of God’s Word emphasizing God’s mercy and grace available to meet the needs of all people. We support ministries in our community: Plateau Pregnancy Services, Cumberland Good Samaritans, and Crossville Christian School. We also support ministries abroad in Bolivia, Czech Republic, and Mexico.
To God be the glory!
